However, your mileage may vary. You will need to get used to answering the question, "Math? What can you do with that?"I'm interested in econ as well, should I pursue that as a minor? As for jobs with the title "mathematician", the main options are to 1) get a Ph.D. I think this had a lot to do with the atmosphere of the department. Of the 10 or so kids in my graduating class, at least 6 are in grad school (for math) today. I had several friends in the department, and we maintained an atmosphere of collaboration there was a lab that was always full of people, and we helped each other out often. The faculty was very friendly and helpful, and I spent many hours in professors' offices asking about all kinds of things. For example, I went to a small liberal arts college with a relatively large math department. Word for mac add in chemistry(the Google founders are a high-profile example of this one, although I know of others- including an algebraist whose thesis became profitable when elliptic curve crypto was being developed, another who developed algorithms for content generation in video games, and a student who recently dropped out of my own school to develop his software project full-time.) The edges of research in mathematics can bring you very close to new and potentially profitable ideas. If you are interested in the terminal degree, there is an option 3), work on a Ph.D., drop out, and start a company. And work for the government (I had a prof that worked for the US Navy for a few years, and an adviser who did a sabbatical at the NSA). This is not a bad thing! You can get a job doing research in mathematics. A major field of research that has immediate applications to business is called Operations Research this basically deals with optimization problems. On a final note, I want to mention that you might get to the end of your degree program and decide that you love doing research. In my own department as an undergrad, I knew people who double majored with math in finance, economics, computer science, physics, and psychology. (Based on my limited experience, econ students who are also math majors can run circles around those who aren't.) A math degree will train you to think in a certain way- methodically, abstractly, and able to juggle complex ideas. Mathematics makes a terrific second major for lots of other degree programs- especially econ. He always believed that even if the person may not be the most qualified at the time, he was looking for the person who would be the best employee after a period of time. Whenever he was looking through a large pile of resumes that the HR department had sent to him, he would always give a good look to people who had a math degree, and often interview them even if the rest of their qualifications may be lacking on paper. :)Just some anecdotal points on the job opportunities notes:1) As far as I remember, people who majored in math were the highest paid group of people in several studies I read over the past few years.2) I know math Ph.D.'s who both did military work before choosing to move to aerospace fields, both were financially rewarded very well.3) My step-dad was the manager at a large corporation for 25+ years. But if you do and can, it is pure bliss. Liking math will help a lot, but I'd suggest that you need to have a goal in mind before you go. :)I was most attracted to academia by the opportunity to do research, to work with people smarter than myself, to work with talented young people, and on a practical level, to have a reasonable salary and schedule with decent job security.Graduate school is an enormous investment of time and energy. Have some salt ready and watch your mileage. Which, those qualities make sense to me given the nature of a math degree.Caveat- this is all from my personal and limited perspective. It's like an internship for mathematicians- you get to see what the work is like before committing to the job. I did this the summer after my senior year and it really helped lock in my decision to go to grad school. These are held all over the country during the summer (and fall in some places). Almost everyone who goes to grad school for math can get a teaching assistantship, so in your first year you will get some teaching experience. You might consider applying to participate in an REU (research experience for undergraduates).
